If nobody has complimented you on your business cards this year, it is time for some new business cards.
In today's digital world, it is easy to overlook the humble business card, yet there is little you can do to overcome the bad first impression that inappropriate business card makes.
No matter how big or small your company is, you should at least invest in a set of personal business cards that establish you as a professional.
That being said, other than the first impression, most of the business cards you give out will be looked at just once or twice and then filed away or discarded.
The reason for that is that the classic business card is mostly an outdated technology designed for the days of the Rolodex, before the invention and widespread use of the iPhone.
But, that is OK. Just like the tie is a completely nonfunctional part of a suit, it is not useless in that it serves a purpose. It creates a good first impression and establishes you as a member of the professional community.
In addition to the formal classic business card, there are also business cards that are the same size and shape of 3.5 inches wide by 2.0 inches tall, however they serve a very different purpose. These are business cards that function as small fliers or coupons for your business and are intended to be distributed in bulk to businesses that can send you referrals.
These Business to Business Promotional Cards (BB PROMO CARDS) are typically printed up 5,000 at a time and distributed to referral sources 100 at a time. These should usually be distributed along with a token of your appreciation - such as a high quality snack or even a gift card. There are surely other members of the business community that get leads for products or service that you provide, but that they do not.
These other parties are a valuable source of business for you, and it is imperative that they have your business cards on hand, ready to give to anybody that needs help. Not only does the business look good by helping out there customer, but the customers referred to you by this other business are typically going to be your best customers because they already need your help and already trust that you are a reputable provider because you were referred to them by another business.
If you are not already getting at least 25% of your business from referrals then it is surely time to evaluate why not. The answer may be as simple as other businesses do not have your business card!
